We are displaying some  ukulele tops below.

When we were milling up literally thousands of sinker tops way back when and after drying and sanding, Rick would go through the lot on his work bench and grade them. They were all mostly stellar but obviously some were special and went in to his private stash. Needless to say, the pile got pretty tall and it still is.  He’s thinking, “I’m turning 70 this month and did the math and it's time to let some of them go.”

# This top is from the first sinker Rick brought home in the early 90's. (we call it "The Log") He was

 out at Mendocino, CA looking for old growth redwood the locals call buckskin

These are ancient trees that were cut down but never gathered. This was not all that

unusual in the 1850's and still to this day are being salvaged. When the sawyer learned

what Rick was looking for he said "I've been saving this log for something special."

 

It was a massive 14' long sinker log with some of the edge split away so that Rick

could see the same grain running the full length in an amazing fashion. Rick did all

the research he could at the time but couldn't find any luthiers that were using it

 on their instruments. The sawyers were making their salvaged logs into beams, other

 dimensional lumber and siding.

 

So he went back and offered to purchase the end 2' and the sawyer would still have

a very saleable 12' for beams or whatever with the  understanding he would return

 and buy the rest if liked the results. After resawing and drying the material, he yielded

more than 30 tops. After he built a guitar using this sinker he went back and bought the

rest of the log and the rest is history.
